Factual TV Rules for Beginners

Accuracy Definition:  Accuracy means how clearly the presenter presents facts to the audience. This means accuracy is not opinions its pure facts with evidence to prove the fact is real also it is how the presenter communicates to the audience whilst saying the fact if it’s hard to understand or easy to understand. A good example to accuracy is any nature documentary because they first do a voice over about the animal providing the audience with facts and then video footage of the animal doing what was said in the fact.

This is a good example of accuracy because of the fact that he give the audience correct facts about the body of the cheetah and proves the facts by giving evidence. At 0.26 he starts to talk about the cheetah's feet and show the camera the feet to prove what he is saying is correct and not a opinion and he could still show a fact. However at 0:45 there is a close up of the cheetah's claws as the presenter then references how they hunt and eat prey this close up shows the audience clearly how dangerous they can be and how they cling to the ground. Then at 1:25 the presenter says "remarkable cheetah pace" he then goes to play football with a cheetah and then counts the amount of strides taken from the cheetah to get the ball back 20 yards away.

A bad example of Accuracy is South Park  Natural History Episode because  the facts they are giving to the public are completely fake for example at 0:10 they say they are going to war with the Indians however for them India is a compactly a different planet to earth. Also At 0:1 they show a map of the different planets in the solar planet. one of the planets on the map was Asgard form the marvel comics and films Thor also they have a green lantern planet.

Balance Definition:  Balance means the balance between for and against arguments. This means that in the documentary of the factual tv show they have both arguments to prove there point and to continue to talk about the for and against of the show.
A bad example is  Fahrenheit 9 11 because the director is very one sided and dose not gave any against arguments to the points he was making for example at 18:20 he decided to talk about George Bush and try and blame the attack on him and how he hasn't made any meeting with the defence commit to get rid of terrorist

A good example is Frozen planet killer whales. this is a good example because its teaching the audience how killer whales hunt in packs and how they succeed. This is a balanced show because of the way the show and facts are presented by the presenter. when the presenter is presenting the facts in the background its in sync with the video of what he is saying so that you can provide a argument against real life footage.

Objectivity and subjectivity: Objectivity means it’s a proven to be a fact and subjectivity means it’s an opinion and cannot argue against a proven fact 

For a good example of balance is this 911 documentary gives for and against reasons for 911 happening but they also try to switch the blame for Muslims to a bystander that as in the Afghanistan. with 911 there are alot of myths but no one has every got to the bottom of it but they continue to blame Muslims and not having any proof of it this documentary is very one sided and he side they are trying to prorate is the innocent one but they give numbers of deaths that terrorist have killed but never give the amount of kills they had done

A bad example  is the hand of god part two. in this case there was mostly a fore argument because Ireland wanted a rematch but they didn't give the against arguments like what if Ireland had got the rematch but under preformed and the match was over within the first half and what if Ireland players got injured examples like that were not present and all they wanted to show was how France had cheated however Thierry Henry had told people he did the hand ball but it was the decision of the official

Impartiality: Impartiality means not favoring one side and has issues from both sides the good and the bad. This is showing both arguments and having evidence to prove the point that has been made.
A good example is loose women. This is a good example because there is a panel of experts and one main presenter that ask the questions to the panel and the women then have to have a discussion over the question it can be heated or it could be for fun but they have to provide there opinion

 A bad example of Impartiality is super size me because in this documentary they are just talking about how bad McDonald is bad for you but hey don't talk about other fast food restaurants that have alot of customers. Even though the documentary is about McDonald they could also give examples like burger king. Because Americas obistly level is high its all McDonald fault.

Opinion
The definition for a opinion TV show is where the presenter gives there own opinions as well as the guest on the show. In some shows as super nanny its completely different because she first gets a video then when says her opinion about the child that needs help. However this opinion was given before she gave help then after she helps the child she then gives her opinion again. Shows such as Sunday politics is a bad example for opinion because the presenter never gives his opinions hes just there to keep every one calm and not start a argument

For a good example of opinion factual TV Match of The Day because the presenter Gary Lineker is very involved in the for and against arguments and even says his own opinions to what had happened in the match. for 0:01 to 1:03 the presenter is presenting facts to the guest to analyse and to have there own say to the facts.However when they are look at the video clip one of the guest is analyzing what had go on in the clip. This then got the other two guest to give there opinion about the play that was made in the clip . At 4:08 again the presenter gives his opinion about the clip for the final statement and then moves on to the next question with the same style ask one then ask the other two. At 4:16 when they start giving another opinion a graphic come on the screen about the question.

A bad example for an opinion show is Question time. This is a bad example of bad opinions unlike match of the day the presenter was active in the discussion however in Question time the presenter picks who should answer the question and that's it. You could say that the presenter is only there for a public figure or keeping everyone calm in the production of the show. This happened all the times the presenter had asked the questions the first time was at 1:30. this would affect the audience because the audience would think that the presenter is there to ask question and help in the discussion but that's not the case because the type of people are very opinionated and want to get there point across to the people watching. When the first question was asked it was from a member of the audience this would show the audience that the audience is real one and not a fake one. However because the show is targeted to more middle aged adults they tend to have people asking questions in the age group of their target. (At 1:25)



Representation
Representation is where the director has a aim to show the characters for who they are. A good example of Representation is The Journey to Summer Slam. This is a good example because the director of the documentary wants to show them as athletes and nothing else. The start of the video by showing a athlete train at 0:01 then they refer to his training and ask him why he trains "ALL THE TIME" but in real life he dose not train all day everyday because it has a impact to his body. From 0:01 to 0:13 they have camera shots focusing on the main character ruining. At 0:22 there is a voice over of the character answering the question why he trains in the desert and they play the voice over of him training. At the end of the interview the character says 'all im going to do is fight' te type of tone he says it in makes it seem like that's all he ever does



A bad example of Representation is Catfish because they don't represent people as normal individuals they tried to some the women as a mystery and wanted to show them as normal people but with a secret. Right from the start they based the story on the main actor Nev and kept asking him questions about the relationship he was in and how he was the innocent one in the story from 0:05- 4:22 they went over a brief overview of the documentary and explaining what the goal was from here they began to talk about the female and represent her as the bad guy even thought she didn't mean to get this far. However at 2:00 the main actor Nev said he dose not wan it to be about him he wants it to be about abby you could say that they are portraying the girl in the worst way even though the male nev had his part in the story aswell


Bias
Bias is when there is only one side explained and they favour that one side to any others. This is a one sided argument that get the audience thinking about the topic and having effects of them A good example is Super size me. This is a good example of bias because the presenter only gives his opinions about how bad McDonald is for they boy but he never says any other fast food restaurants he automatic blames Americans oboist levels  on McDonald . At 0:10 when hes ordering food in the clip they does not show what he ordered they only showed if would like a large meal. This shows that he wants to show McDonald for its bad and unhealthy side and not any other side because he wants to blame McDonald for everything

A bad example of bias is Little big brother because they have a panel of expert to give there own opinion about what had happened in the show. Even though they have there own favoured to win they still stay good stuff about the others and how they act around others. For example at 15:58 they show a lip from the day and then they get a expert to talk about the clip and explain what they might have been feeling when making the comments and showing the audience how they act is the main purpose. this is a a bad example of bias because they don't take anyone side for them every one is the same and have the same rights

Access and Privacy
Access and Privacy is when the media access to use and mention in the documentary. The information that is given our to the public may not necessary been asked to be realised and would effect peoples privacy.

A good example of this is Inside North Korea. This is a good example of Access and Privacy because when making the documentary tourist are not aloud to film in the country with out the right documentation as that one of the rules were no filming in general. as you can see at 2:08 the camera was shacking because it was handheld. This was because they wanted to hide the camera because if they got noticed they would get in to alot of trouble. However when giving the information he did give the evidence of what they were saying so it was the truth and not lies.



A bad example of Access and privacy is crime watch. This is a bad example because its a reconstruction of a event that happened in the past. Sometimes They do get access to make the reconstruction and to inform people what had happened however they do keep the identity safe of the victim but not the criminal. This here breaches access and privacy rules because they don't ask the criminal if they want to be mentioned or on the show. However when the showed CCTV the privacy of the public on the bus was covered with a blurred images to protect there identity.

Contract with Viewer

Contract with Viewer is when the presenter presents information to the audience that is true. However the facts that are presented have to be accurate because they have to abide by the rules of Ofcom. They must also tell the audience the brief f the show and what it it’s based on for example a good example of this is 60 minutes make over. This is a bad example because they say at the start of the show that the person the makeover s for is out of the house for 1 hour so that a team can redecorate the house with a limited amount of time. At 20:40 they show the team however the team seems to look a lot less to what is shown in each room. This here goes against the rules of contract with the viewer because you can’t redecorate a house within a hour and they keep showing the team without everyone there to seem like it’s all scripted and happens over a number of hours or even days

A good example is inside nature’s giants the squid because the aim of the show is to show the audience and provide the audience with the truth of the squid and how they have adapted in the years and how some facts are wrong about the squid. At 11:59 they talk about the size of the squid and they also tell and show the audience how they squid breaths but they also prove evidence of this to support their argument this here is keeping to the contract with the viewer because they are telling the truth and correcting all the facts that was made in the past. However at 22:26 they also show short and small experiments about the squids to extend through knowledge about the squid.
